Vane vs Open WebUI: search engine or model workspace?
Vane is the more direct cited-web-answer starting point. Open WebUI is the more natural starting point for local chat, documents and shared accounts.
Choose by your primary workflow
Start with Vane if most sessions begin with a web question and end with a cited answer. Start with Open WebUI if you want a common home for models, people and document workflows, with search added as a configured capability. Both depend on the quality of your models and integrations.
Practical differences
| Need | Vane | Open WebUI |
|---|---|---|
| First task | Search-backed answer | Model conversation / workspace |
| Search setup | Standard image includes SearXNG | Configure a supported search integration |
| Ollama | Native provider; configure chat and embedding | Direct Ollama integration |
| Shared usage | Review current authentication and isolation capabilities | Account and permission workflows; still need configuration |
| Application memory | 4 GB editorial budget | 2 GB editorial budget for a small setup |
| License | MIT in checked source | Open WebUI License with branding conditions |
The memory numbers exclude chat-model weights and are planning allowances, not measured minimums or performance claims. Use the hardware checker to add model and OS reserves.
If you already use Ollama
Open WebUI is a straightforward home for existing local models. Keep the model endpoint reachable, select embeddings for documents and add a search provider deliberately. If search quality and cited answers dominate your workflow, test the same Ollama model in Vane before deciding.
If several people will share it
Start with Open WebUI’s account and permission features. Review document visibility, model access, admin setup and storage before inviting users. Model-serving memory and concurrency are separate from the UI container. Neither this guide nor the single-user calculator sizes a production multi-user deployment.
Vane’s search-first setup is attractive for a local trial. Do not assume it has your required SSO, tenant isolation or role controls; verify the exact current version against your requirements.
If you need local documents
Both require appropriate embedding and retrieval configuration. Test a small document whose answer you can check. Confirm whether indexing, embeddings and chat use local or remote endpoints. Changing the embedding model may require reindexing.
A fair comparison
Use the same host, chat model and representative questions where possible. Test web retrieval and document retrieval separately. Record setup effort, citation usefulness, response time and what happens when a provider is unavailable. This page offers workflow recommendations, not a fabricated benchmark score.
Start here
- Want a cited web answer now? Follow Vane Docker.
- Have Ollama and want a workspace? Follow Open WebUI.
- Need personal knowledge assistance? Consider Khoj as a third option.
Before you deploy
Can I run both against the same Ollama server?
Yes, if both clients can reach it and the server has sufficient capacity. Concurrent requests can change latency and memory requirements.
Does Open WebUI replace a search provider?
No. Its web-search workflow needs a supported search integration. A working chat model is a separate component.
