Pick your starting point.
Three needs. Three clear paths.
“I want answers
in 10 minutes.”
Start with Vane. One container includes the search engine. Bring a model API key or an existing model server; downloads take extra time.
“I already
use Ollama.”
Start with Open WebUI. Connect your local models, add your documents, then enable web search when you need it.
“My team needs
a place to work.”
Start with Open WebUI for accounts and shared workflows. Check access controls and licensing before inviting your team.
What can you run?
A small reality check before a very large model download.

Which open source alternative feels most like Perplexity?
Start with Vane (formerly Perplexica) for cited web answers. Choose Open WebUI if local-model chat, document workflows and accounts matter more than a search-first interface.
Is self-hosting free?
The software may be free to use under its license. Hardware, electricity, hosted model tokens and optional search APIs can still cost money. Check each project’s current license and dependencies.
Can I run these tools completely offline?
Local chat and indexed-document workflows can work offline after downloading all models and dependencies. Live web search cannot. A local LLM alone does not make a complete research workflow offline.
Are Perplexica and Vane different projects?
They are the same project lineage. Perplexica was renamed Vane and the old official repository URL redirects to ItzCrazyKns/Vane. Use current Vane installation instructions.
Do I need a GPU?
Not for a hosted model API. Local models can use CPU and system RAM, but responses may be slow. Dedicated GPU memory or Apple unified memory can make local inference more practical.
